Timber Protection

The Biological research of wood and it’s renewable material is what is referred to as wood science. The processes and the tools used to utilize the material is what is known as wood technology. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. The wood is checked against the other materials properties, performances, value, and work-ability. Wood has many advantages and this technology takes the advantages and utilizes them. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. Wood is renewable, and this makes it more precious. Timber can be utilized in very many applications, and this makes it more valuable.

Protection of wooden structure and products is a must if you want to keep the good looks in place. The biggest threat to wood being moisture and insects has to be kept away from the wood. The rotting and decay of the timber products are caused by the moisture and the insects. Many methods are available in the treatment of wood one of the most common being the ACQ – alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. As effective as this preservative, it has some downside to its use. It has been seen corroding most metals for example aluminum in less than six months of its application. The concentration of the chemical that will be used to treat a piece of wood will depend on the where it is going to be used and the molecular structure of the wood. Timber being used around a water body will be dipped in a more saturated fluid than that being used above ground.

The use of copper metal is another method of wood treatment that is fast being accepted. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. The copper metal is applied to the wood as small microscopic particles injected into the wood at high pressure. The process eliminates the need to dissolve the copper as is done in earlier copper-based preservatives. When this process is used to treat timber the timber properties are increased highly. The time the wood products treated using this method last is longer other types of treatment.

The micronized copper preservative has proven to be highly effective in protecting the wood against fungal decay and termites. It has also shown to be an improvement in corrosion resistant properties to metal fasteners. The wood treated using this method last longer and is stronger.
